Keynote: The Questions Kids Carry: Helping Students to Connect Their Curiosity to Your Content
Shanna will share a process to help students think about the questions that really matter to them. With this base as a base for lesson-planning, you can help students link what they are deeply curious about to what you need to teach. The link makes the work of learning explicit and engaging for students of various ability levels.

Student-Led Conferences
Limited Capacity seats available

Research shows how important it is for students to own their learning and reflect upon it.  At the Springfield Renaissance School, an EL Education school, Student-Led Family Conferences (SLFC) are a staple.  Through reflections and preparations, students gain a deeper understanding of who they are as a learner.  As the student leads the SLFC, the family and teacher support each student as they share data, work, reflections, and goals.

What is Challenge Success?
Limited Capacity seats available

Bedford High School is partnering with Challenge Success to broaden our students' definition of success. Our society has become too focused on grades, test scores, and performance, leaving little time for kids to develop the necessary skills to become resilient, ethical, and motivated learners. Come find out how educators, students and the community are coming together in an effort to help our students find balance and joy. Afterall, we want our students to build a life, not just a resume.  Faculty from all schools are welcome to learn more.  This session will include student presenters as well.

Project Based Learning Pathways: Reflections on a 6th Grade PBL Pilot at Westford Public Schools
Limited Capacity seats available

Project based learning (PBL) is a student-centered learning model that has a long history of implementation in schools, but is still considered to be an innovative teaching method to better prepare students for college, career and life. Research has shown that PBL can be particularly effective in helping students develop 21st century skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication and creativity, as well as improving retention of cognitive skills and knowledge.

In the 2017-18 school year, the Westford, MA public school system decided to launch a pilot 6th grade classroom that would offer a fully integrated (i.e., STEM and Humanities) PBL classroom as an alternative to traditional subject-specific classroom settings. Parents opted into the choice of this classroom for their children, and for some it was a way of trying to re-engage their sons and daughters who were losing interest in school. The session will summarize the results of the pilot in the words of the two teachers who led the class, two of their students from the pilot classroom, as well as an evaluator who conducted a mixed methods assessment during the school year. Topics covered in the session will include an explanation of how the integrated PBL model was implemented, what was needed to make the year a success, and what were the key learnings by looking at the outcomes from the year. Perspectives from students, parents, teachers and the administration will be included in the session.

Universal Design for Learning: Engaging All Learners
Limited Capacity seats available

How can we design learning experiences that engage all students? How can we leverage the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to reduce barriers in the environment so that all can build expert learning skills and strategies that extend beyond the classroom? How can we achieve these goals with the constraints of a busy academic schedule? This session will offer connections between the brain science of learning and practical strategies to engage all learners in rigorous learning. It will include concrete action-items that can be used “tomorrow.” We will focus on the central role of emotions for learning and cognition.

Stories No One Told Me: Hidden History that Shapes Our Thinking
Limited Capacity seats available

Learning from history is a social and emotional journey, an analytical endeavor, and a meaning making experience.  This is never more true than when we examine the too often overlooked engine of our evolution as a nation and as a people: racism and the struggle to end it.  Despite the unconscious ways that this powerful history shapes our identities, it has always been hidden, marginalized, or reduced to slavery and the Civil Rights Movement.  Here is an opportunity to explore our emotions and deepen our understanding as we learn some stories that most of us were never taught.

Utilizing Your Makerspace for Social and Emotional Learning
Limited Capacity seats available

Student engagement in the makerspace is a natural process. As students create in the makerspace they feel a sense of empowerment and independence. As you navigate abstract issues like bullying, kindness and empathy within your school, the makerspace can provide an engaging and safe environment where students feel comfortable being creative. Utilize student investment to begin integrating your social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum into your makerspace to build a stronger school community. Come hear from a library media specialist and digital learning coach about our pilot year of sparking a change in our school community for better with different grade-level ideas that “stem” from the maker mentality - including a kindness project, literary engineering, student service squad, and designing a better school. We’ll share where our ideas came from, gaining teacher and administration buy-in, how we implemented changes for each grade, our lessons learned, and more! Participants will walk away with fresh ideas, lesson resources, and ready to tackle social and emotional learning with a maker mentality.

It’s not about the speaker: The History of Hip-Hop and its Impact on Cultural Identity
Limited Capacity full

This PD aims to look at the history of hip-hop, its political and cultural implications, and how all of that information can guide educators in both the classroom and the hallways. Rap/Hip-Hop is the most (academically) studied and (currently) the most popular genre of music in America. Prior to the early to mid-2000's rap was written off as a fad that would be replaced as quickly as it "showed up." Well, that was not the case. Hip-hop became so much more than the songs. It revealed an alternative to the narrative America was so accustomed to hearing and seeing. It was real and raw and unapologetic. It was a way to be heard. It was a way to fight back. Hip-hop became the voice of a marginalized community.

Brain Breaks
Limited Capacity seats available

Get some ideas about how to incorporate movement, relaxation, and fun breaks into your class routines to enhance learning and student engagement. This is geared toward teachers of any content or grade--students at all levels can benefit from a break in their work to increase attention and focus. Movement, stretching, balance, breathing, games, and other types of breaks for the brain will be shared and practiced, along with tips I've learned over the past couple of years to make it easier to implement and follow through with. Past students tell me they miss the brain breaks and current students report they want and need them, and some days they help me as much as they help my students.

Google Classroom
Limited Capacity seats available

The focus of this workshop will be on google classroom/tools integration strategies that help create a more efficient and powerful workflow for the teacher. Topics will likely include: creating an assignment in google classroom, grading and giving comment and feedback on assignments, and making use of google slides for daily schedules. While those who have not yet learned about google classroom will get a sense of what possibilities it may hold, these strategies will be more applicable to attendees who are already familiar with the basics of google classroom. This might be of particular use for the special education teacher who might like to do more with co-teaching access to regular education google classrooms.
